A Day in the Life of York River State Park: So Long Summer
Good-bye Summer
Leaves are already turning golden and red on a few trees. The calls of osprey are not as frequent as they used to be. Atlantic croaker and other seasonal saltwater species are starting to leave the tidal creeks to make their way into the Chesapeake Bay and ocean. Yes ladies and gentlemen, the summer season at York River and all other Virginia State Parks is coming to a close.
The last sample of summer sweetness
Good Times for Guests
Bringing park guests into our estuarine ecosystem is the focal point of our summer interpretive programs. From our eight weeks of Kid’s Kamps, to our weekend events, to those impromptu “ah-ha” moments, we have enjoyed sharing our waters and woods with people of all ages and walks of life. There are few things as fun and rewarding as eating s'mores with Junior Rangers over a fire they built or “discovering” a “lost island” in a marsh. Memories like these are neatly packed away in the hearts of those who experienced them.

A Talented Interpretive Team
Our seasonal staff has been key to making this another great season at York River State Park. AmeriCorps Intern Casey Killan used her background in childhood and environmental education to bring fresh ideas to our Kid’s Camps. Her partner, Conservation Intern Tim Minich brought his love for and knowledge of forestry to the camps and weekend programs. Our other Conservation Intern, Daniel Keener proved to be a resource of information about the natural world. Casey has left us for a camp opportunity in upstate New York. Tim and Daniel are winding down there time here at the park.

Hold on to the Memories
Autumn will not be a slack season for us. Private and public schools have already booked canoeing and hiking field trips with us. There will still be some weekend programs and volunteer opportunities until the end of the year. We may all welcome the cool, crisp days that are around the corner. But, let us savor thoughts of summer just a little while longer as we approach the edge of the new season.
