Plan for family spring break fun at Virginia State Parks
With schools across the state taking a break for spring, Virginia’s 36 state parks are offering special activities from April 11 through April 27. As everyone is pulled in different directions, spring break in a state park is an opportunity to get the family together for outdoor fun.
In addition to spring break, Earth Week and Arbor Day add opportunities to participate in volunteer projects or learn to be more environmentally friendly. A complete list of spring break, Earth Week and Arbor Day activities is here: http://tiny.cc/mw3bdx. Whether ranger-led or self-guided, all activities help you experience nature or learn about cultural heritage.
Several parks also offer egg hunts and special Easter themed events and other programs. Go to www.virginiastateparks.gov, click on “Events” and search by park, date and type of program.
Most Virginians live within an hour of a Virginia State Park allowing for a fun-filled day in their nearest park. For those who want to spend more time enjoying all the park and local area have to offer, 24 state parks offer camping and 19 have cabins that range from cozy dwellings to spacious family lodges.
Whether you use a tent or a large RV, Virginia State Parks can provide the camping experience that's right for you. For those new to camping, four state parks offer camping cabins allowing guests to try their hand at the experience without the expense of buying a tent. Each camping cabin sleeps four and has access to the campground bathhouse.
Cabin guests can choose from historic structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps to modern cabins built with the same care and craftsmanship as those built by the CCC. Sizes range from one-room efficiencies to family lodges that sleep up to 16. These cabins include linens, dishes, glassware, pots and pans, and bathrooms. Most have fireplaces; all have central heat and air conditioning.
The Virginia State Parks customer service center can assist in finding overnight accommodations right for you. Call the center toll free Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 800-933-PARK (7275) or make reservations online at www.virginiastateparks.gov.
