(RICHMOND) - Virginia State Parks will offer special activities and programs June 1 as part of National Trails Day' and Clean the Bay Day.
Special activities will be held at every state park, including Powhatan State Park, a new park opening this summer. Powhatan will host the park's first volunteer work day.
Each of the 20 Virginia State Parks in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed will host Clean the Bay Day events.

The American Hiking Society's National Trails Day is held to encourage the public to learn about trails while participating in outdoor activities, clinics and trail work projects.

According to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Clean the Bay Day volunteers have removed 5.8 million pounds of debris from nearly 5,500 miles of Virginia shoreline. More than 122,000 people have volunteered since the event began in 1989.
