Governor McAuliffe invites all Virginians to "Make a Difference" this Earth Week
Today Governor Terry McAuliffe urged his fellow Virginians to celebrate Earth Week by getting involved in a number of environmentally-based special programs and volunteer projects being offered in Virginia State Parks, April 17-25. The Governor himself will celebrate Earth Day at Pocahontas State Park by participating in a native habitat construction project.
“Earth Day is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the enormous natural resources that make Virginia great,” said Governor McAuliffe. “It is also a chance to help preserve and enhance our Commonwealth’s environment by getting involved in an environmental service project near your own community.”
Virginia State Parks projects range from First Landing State Park’s Tree Army planting trees to protect sensitive areas in Virginia Beach, to a plant-one, get-one tree planting at James River State Park in Buckingham County.
Caledon State Park, in King George County, will feature its annual "One Man's Trash is Another Man's Art Contest" on April 18. Participants help with a cleanup along the Potomac River and convert their trash finds into works of art.
All 36 Virginia State Parks will offer special programming or volunteer projects related to preserving the environment, recycling, upcycling, developing natural habitats or beautifying parks. Other projects include habitat creation for the threatened Monarch Butterfly, weeding, trail maintenance and plantings.
Many volunteer opportunities are part of the Spring Stewardship Virginia Campaign and participants will receive a certificate from Governor McAuliffe for participating.
