Staunton River State Park master plan to be discussed March 19
RICHMOND — A public meeting to discuss long-range planning for Staunton River State Park will be held March 19, 6 p.m., at the park visitor center, located at 1170 Staunton Trail, Scottsburg.
Staff with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation will provide an overview of proposed updates to the park’s master plan.
Each state park has a master plan that guides development. Plans are updated every five years and must be current before funds are allocated for new facilities.
“Master plans outline the desired future condition for a park when it is fully developed,” said DCR Park Planner Bill Conkle. “We welcome public input in the planning process.”
The draft master plan for Staunton River State Park proposes construction of a new park entrance and interior park road, a campground, an environmental education center, additional cabins and canoe-in camping facilities. It also proposes expansion of the trail system and visitor center, as well as upgrades to the Edmunds Lake dam.
The park, located in Halifax County, is situated at the confluence the Dan and Staunton rivers.
Written comments about this master plan update will be accepted through April 19. Written comments should be submitted to Bill Conkle, park planner, at bill.conkle@dcr.virginia.gov.
DCR manages Virginia’s 36 state parks.
