Search Our Database

Run on-line queries to find information on Virginia's 1600+ natural heritage resources. You can search for information on individual or groups of resources, by scientific or common name, taxonomic group, federal or state legal status, global or state rarity rank. Plus, you can produce on-line lists of resources grouped and sorted by the different geographic references listed below.

All searches return HTML formatted lists including the scientific/common names, taxonomic group, global and state heritage rarity ranks, federal legal status under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, and Virginia state legal status.

Additionally, scientific names are hotlinked to NatureServe Explorer to provide more detailed species information.

NatureServe Explorer is a product of NatureServe, in collaboration with the Natural Heritage Network. A source for conservation information on more than 50,000 plants, animals, and ecological communities of the United States and Canada, NatureServe provides in-depth information on rare and endangered species, as well as common plants and animals.

Species/Natural Community Query - Output also includes total number of known occurrences statewide.

County Query - If no county, or more than one county checked results will be sorted and grouped by county. Output also includes last known observed date in the county.

Physiographic province Query - If no province, or more than one is checked the results will be sorted and grouped by province.

Watershed Query - (USGS 8 digit watershed) If no watershed, or more than one is checked the results will be sorted and grouped by watershed.

Subwatershed Query - (14 digit watershed) If no watershed, or more than one is checked the results will be sorted and grouped by watershed.

Note: On-line queries provide basic information from DCR's databases at the time of the request. They are NOT to be substituted for a project review or for on-site surveys required for environmental assessments of specific project areas.
