SITE DESCRIPTION:
On the western slope of the Blue Ridge in the Shenandoah Valley, Cowbane Prairie NAP protects an outstanding example of a
wet prairie, which was once a more common natural community in the area. This rare habitat type has been reduced over the
years by agricultural and industrial development in the valley. Six rare plants including queen-of-the-prairie, blueflag,
and marsh-speedwell, are found at the preserve. Though common to prairies in the Midwest, these plants are extremely rare
in Virginia, occurring at only a handful of sites. Many of these prairie species are noted for their beautiful flowers.
VISITATION:
Part or all of the preserve may be periodically closed for resource protection or prescribed
burning activities. Please call before visiting.
