Acidic Oak-Hickory Woodland / Savanna – CEGL003722
A prairie-like grassland in the training area of Fort Pickett Military Reservation, occurring in a patch-mosaic with woodlands and savannas.  Although most pre-settlement grasslands were likely to have occurred in savannas with scattered trees, there may have been some stands large enough to be considered "prairies."  The small occurrences of grasslands at Fort Pickett and the Quantico Marine Base comprise our only Piedmont examples of grassland vegetation that has been shaped by burns of a size, frequency, and intensity comparable to those of putative pre-settlement fire regimes.
