Acidic Oak-Hickory Woodland / Savanna – CEGL003722
The Fort Pickett Military Reservation's 10,000-acre controlled access training area contains extensive oak-hickory woodlands and savannas that have been burned by frequent incendiary fires for about 80 years. This stand, in the Birchin Creek drainage of Nottoway County, is typical of semi-closed woodlands that have a mixture of forbs and grasses in the herb layer. © DCR-DNH, Gary P. Fleming
