Forests strongly dominated by chestnut oak (Quercus montana), with mountain-laurel (Kalmia latifolia) common in the shrub layer, are widespread in rugged, often rocky terrain of both the mountains and Piedmont.  Middle ridge of the Bull Run Mountains, north of Hopewell Gap, Fauquier County.
