The Central Appalachian Basic Ash-Hickory Woodland is characterized by species-rich herbaceous vegetation.  Here, woodland sunflower (Helianthus divaricatus), hoary mountain-mint (Pycnanthemum incanum var. incanum), wild quinine (Parthenium integrifolium var. integrifolium), and poverty oat grass (Danthonia spicata) grow in a metabasalt woodland near Lewis Spring Falls in Shenandoah National Park, Page County.
