DCR-DNH ecologist Karen Patterson collects plot data from an extensive high-elevation seep on the north slope of Elk Ridge in the Balsam Mountains, Smyth County.  American false-hellebore (Veratrum viride) is dying back for the season, while wood nettle (Laportea canadensis) attains maximal growth.  Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, George Washington & Jefferson National Forests.
