Central Appalachian Montane Oak - Hickory Forest (Rich Type) – CEGL008518
Two types of montane oak-hickory forests occur in the Virginia mountains.  The Rich Type occurs on metabasalt and calcareous sandstones from about 2500 to 4000 ft elevation and features a luxuriant herb layer dominated by colonial forbs.  This stand is on the Northern Blue Ridge above Pocosin Hollow in Greene County, Shenandoah National Park.
