Central Appalachian Dry-Mesic Chestnut Oak - Northern Red Oak Forest – CEGL006057

An old-age stand of Central Appalachian chestnut oak - northern red oak forest in quartzite rubble below cliffs on the western slope of High Point Mountain in the Bull Run Mountains, Fauquier County.  The large chestnut oaks (Quercus montana) in the stand have been aged by DNH ecologists at > 250 years.  Bull Run Mountains State Natural Area Preserve.
