Central Appalachian chestnut oak - red oak forests are widespread in the mountains, and also occur in isolated patches on north-facing bluffs along Piedmont rivers.  This stand fronts the Rappahannock River south of Kellys Ford in Fauquier County.  C.F. Phelps State Wildlife Management Area.
