Central Appalachian montane mixed oak forests often occur on weathered boulderfields with cool aspects.  This mature stand is on sandstone rubble on the northwest slope of Powell Mountain in the Massanutten Mountains, above Woodstock, Shenandoah County.  Lee Ranger District, George Washington & Jefferson National Forests.
