Central Appalachian Dry-Mesic Chestnut Oak - Northern Red Oak Forest – CEGL006057
An old-age stand of Central Appalachian chestnut oak - northern red oak forest on the northwest flank of Bald Mountain in northeastern Craig County. American chestnut (Castanea dentata) was originally co-dominant with the oaks; killed by the chestnut blight in the early 20th century, its huge fallen boles are still present on the forest floor.
