Southern Appalachian Montane Mixed Oak Forest (Northern Red Oak - Chestnut Oak Submesic Type) – CEGL004817
Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) and great rhododendron (Rhododendron maximum) in the understory of a montane mixed oak forest.  Normally, hemlock would be considered a potential overstory successor to the oaks, but its future is in doubt because of the insect pathogen hemlock woolly adelgid.  On ridge southwest of Quebec, Smyth County.  Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, George Washington & Jefferson National Forests.
