This Southern Appalachian montane mixed oak forest contains both non-ericaceous and ericaceous understory plants, including striped maple (Acer pensylvanicum), Fraser magnolia (Magnolia fraseri), great rhododendron (Rhododendron maximum), hemlock (Tsuga canadensis), and American chestnut sprouts (Castanea dentata).  Eastern flank of Hurricane Mountain, Iron Mountains, west of Trout Dale, Grayson County.  Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, George Washington & Jefferson National Forests.
