Maritime Swamp Forest (Red Maple - Tupelo Type) – CEGL004082
Seasonally flooded forests dominated by red maple (Acer rubrum), gums (Nyssa biflora, Nyssa sylvatica, and/or Liquidambar styraciflua), and loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) constitute the most widespread type of maritime swamp in Virginia, occupying deep, protected interdune swales, flats immediately behind tidal marshes, and the bottoms of streams just inland from estuarine zones. Headwaters of Deal Creek at south end of False Cape State Park and Natural Area Preserve, City of Virginia Beach.
