Piedmont Mafic Barren – CEGL006294

Plants of the Bald Knob mafic barrens - including prickly-pear (Opuntia humifusa), Piedmont fameflower (Phemeranthus piedmontanus), rock spikemoss (Bryodesma rupestre), pineweed (Hypericum gentianoides), and common buttonweed (Hexasepalum teres) - are all drought-tolerant and capable of growing on the thinnest of substrates.  Bald Knob State Natural Area Preserve.
