The five-acre complex of boulderfields on the upper north slope of Sounding Knob on Jack Mountain in Highland County (elevation ~ 4200 ft.) is one of only two substantial occurrences of the Central Appalachian high-elevation acidic nonvascular boulderfield community in Virginia.
