Central Appalachian Low-Elevation Acidic Nonvascular Cliff / Boulderfield – CEGL004142
The west-facing slope of the Blackrock quartzite boulderfield in Shenandoah National Park (Rockingham County), with another small boulderfield on the slope of Trayfoot Mountain in the distance. Over centuries and millennia of weathering, woodlands of sweet birch (Betula lenta var. lenta) have managed to slowly encroach and cover the edges of the boulderfield.
