Central Appalachian Low-Elevation Acidic Nonvascular Cliff / Boulderfield – CEGL004142
The boulderfields at Blackrock in Shenandoah National Park (Rockingham County) were deposited from the in-place weathering of massive quartzite outcrops along a sharp ridge spur near the summit of the Blue Ridge.  This photo shows a remnant, fractured outcrop near the highest elevation and covered by the colorful golden moonglow lichen (Dimelaena oreina).
