SITE DESCRIPTION:

Rising above the South Fork Roanoke River, Pedlar Hills Natural Area Preserve supports several rare plants and natural communities. Most notable of these is a rare natural community called a dolomite barren. This scrubby or open woodland habitat supports stunted hardwoods and red cedar (Juniperus virginiana var. virginiana) and contains open, grassy, prairie-like vegetation. Tall gay-feather is one uncommon species found in these barrens. Also found here are Addison's leatherflower (Clematis addisonii) - a rare Virginia endemic that grows in open dry woodlands on south-facing slopes, and two other rare plant species.

VISITATION:
This preserve has no public access facilities.

Also, part or all of the preserve may be periodically closed for resource protection or prescribed burning activities. Please call before visiting.
