Recommended area standards for recreational development are in the Virginia Outdoors Plan as well as in an annual report to the General Assembly entitled Virginia State Parks Planning Standards and Status. It identifies area, space and capacity standards. The plan suggests a standard for Virginia's State Parks of 10 acres/1,000 residents. The area standards represent a minimum that should be exceeded when possible. The December 2001 report indicated that there is a statewide deficiency of greater than 8,333 acres of lands for state parks. Priorities for acquisition of state parks will be published in the Virginia Outdoors Plan.
