Westmoreland State Park, located in Montross, Virginia, is hiring for the summer season! We are accepting applications for the Interpretive Assistant who will serve as a member of the park's Visitor Experience team. This role is great for individuals who are outgoing, responsible, and have a strong interest in working with a wide variety of customers. Responsibilities include assisting with interpretive duties throughout the park and planning and presenting a variety of programs focusing on the natural, environmental, historic and cultural features of Westmoreland State Park. Programs may include campfires, music programs, nature crafts, environmental history, and outdoor recreation skills, guided hikes and kayak trips. Interpreters are responsible for keeping the Discovery Center open and organized; assisting with schools groups, scout programs, fairs and park programming; and informing park visitors of rules and regulations for the purpose of protecting and preserving park natural areas. This position may be required to perform park related duties as needed during emergencies or on a non-recurring basis. Training will be provided at no cost.
Minimum Qualifications: Excellent customer service skills. Possess basic knowledge of Virginia's flora and fauna, and the ability to plan, organize, and conduct tours and programs featuring them. Must be comfortable with public speaking, and dealing with the general public. A valid Virginia Driver's License is required.
Additional Consideration: Familiarity with outdoor skills techniques in watercraft or hiking.
Special Requirements: Must be willing to work shift work to include weekdays, weekends and holidays, with occasional evenings. Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1500 hours from May 1 to April 30. Employer participates in E-Verify. Employment in all positions within the Virginia State Parks is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background check including a criminal history record check.
