Environmental Specialist I, Natural Areas Oper Steward, #00433 Natural Heritage Close 3/19/13
Closes On: 03/19/2013DCR is currently seeking candidates for a Natural Areas Operations Steward position located in northern Virginia. This position includes law enforcement duties and is part of a team of natural areas stewards managing the state natural area preserve system that protects outstanding examples of Virginia's natural communities and provides habitat for rare plants and animals. Candidates selected for an interview will also be required to satisfactorily complete physical agility and mental health assessments. This position is based out of Stafford, Virginia.
Responsibilities include: Leading natural areas management activities at state preserves in the Northern Virginia Region, with a primary focus at Crow's Nest Natural Area Preserve in Stafford. Specific duties include developing and implementing plans for preserve site security, public access, signage and access control; conducting visitor use monitoring; constructing and maintaining public use facilities; boundary line maintenance; conducting managed deer and waterfowl hunts; working with volunteers; assisting with natural resource management projects. The position carries out the law enforcement duties of a sworn DCR Conservation Officer on natural area preserves in northern Virginia, enforcing state laws and DCR regulations and developing/maintaining working relationships with local law enforcement organizations.
Qualifications: Working experience or knowledge of natural resource management, law enforcement principles and conservation of rare species. Experience with road and trail construction and maintenance, surveying, mapping, boundary line maintenance, prescribed burning, pesticide application, equipment operations and maintenance, carpentry, facilities maintenance and public-use monitoring. Skills w/hand tools, small power tools, carpentry & heavy equipment operation. Proven ability to supervise contractors, volunteers and temporary employees and experience in administrating projects including budgeting and planning. Strong skills required in oral and written communication, organization and problem solving. Individual must have the ability to work independently and in teams, and be proficient with personal computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets and databases. Ability to collect spatial data and navigate terrain using global positioning systems (GPS) and to conduct analysis and produce maps with geographic information system (GIS) software.
Bachelors degree and experience preferred in forestry, wildlife, fisheries or recreation management. Individual is required to possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Virginia driver's license and certifications in CPR and First Aid and other certifications as necessary.

Required to accept law enforcement training and authority. Sworn Conservation Officer Requirements: Must be a US Citizen; be at least 21 years old; must pass a background investigation including fingerprint-based criminal history records inquires; must be a high school graduate or have a GED degree; have not been convicted of or pleaded guilty or no contest to a felony or any offense that would be a felony if committed in Virginia; and have not tested positive on a pre- employment drug screening test. Federal law prohibits anyone convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence from carrying a firearm.
Hiring Range: $38,000-$48,000
