Environmental Specialist II (Nutrient Management Specialist) Pos #00777, Closes 6/28/13
Closes On: 06/28/2013Position #00777 is a restricted position contingent upon annual federal funds appropriation and located in Montgomery County Virginia (Christiansburg).
Duties: Position is responsible for implementing Virginia's Nutrient Management Program in its assigned territory. It provides Certified Nutrient Management Plans; technical assistance to landowners and agricultural operators; nutrient management plan reviews for regulatory and incentive programs; and educational programs to targeted groups on how to reduce levels of nutrients entering ground and surface waters. Additional duties include providing watershed program support and teamwork; nutrient management plan writing; and biosolids, animal waste, and best management practices cost-share site reviews and reports. Selected candidate will be expected to support the agency/division strategic plan, team efforts, and a work environment where the standard is excellence.
Qualifications: Knowledge of agricultural production practices, nutrient management, and land-use issues; ability to work with a diverse population; ability to plan effectively, manage projects, and perform duties with minimum supervision; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and proficiency in using MS Office (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, database) and other relevant software. Certification as a Nutrient Management Planner or able to obtain certification within 12 months of employment.
Preferred qualifications: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in an agricultural-related discipline (i.e. Agronomy, Crop & Soil Environmental Science, Agricultural Engineering, Dairy Science, etc.) or equivalent training and experience to provide the needed knowledge and abilities in those fields; and work experience directly related to the duties stated above.
HIRING RANGE: $40,959 - $55,000
Special Requirements: The incumbent of this position may also be required to work some evenings, additional hours when needed, and do an extensive amount of daytime travel.
Must be capable of lifting up to 50 lbs.; must be able to climb, stand, pull, bend, and perform physical tasks requiring manual dexterity throughout portions of the workday. Must be capable of working while exposed to environments containing dust. Must possess a valid driver's license.
