Fairy Stone State Park, located in Stuart, Virginia, has employment opportunities for the following positions:

April - November Positions

Administrative & Office Specialist I (Contact Ranger): Provides information regarding state park services and other local attractions. Staffs the park's contact station and office/gift shop. Collects appropriate fees and registers overnight guests. Keeps gift shop neat and stocked with merchandise. Must be able to learn on- line reservation system and on-line hunting & fishing license sales system. Must be able to operate a computer, cash register, fax machine, laminator, handheld radio & multi-line phone system. Must be able to provide accurate information on campsite and cabin reservation procedures, park fees, annual passes, trail information, park nature programs, driving directions and local area information. Must be able to reconcile revenue collected to cash register reports. Performs clerical duties such as answering telephones, copying, typing correspondence and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Must have reliable transportation. Prior experience in parks or a related field is desirable. General knowledge of office and computer operations preferred and ability to meet/work well with the public in a pleasing manner is required. Must provide own uniform (through approved uniform supply company) and must be willing to work shifts, weekends, and holidays from April through November.

Parks Interpreter (Naturalist): Plans and presents programs that interpret the park's natural, cultural, and historical resources. Plans and presents environmental education activities. Plans and presents canoe tours on Fairy Stone lake. Coordinates, facilitates, and evaluates special interpretive programming. Plans and presents summer children’s programs. Conducts research for program development and presentation. Cleans and maintains: beach activities room, Visitor Center, exhibits, furnishings, program equipment and supplies. Plans and leads outdoor adventure programs. Assists park visitors using good customer service techniques. Maintains interpretive library and audiovisual equipment. Keeps accurate records and assists with other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent; ability to organize and conduct nature, culture and history programs for all ages; ability to effectively communicate with people of all ages, both verbally and in writing; knowledge of Virginia history; understanding of ecology and familiarity with the area’s flora and fauna. Preferred Qualifications: At least two years of college education with a major study in outdoor recreation, natural science, history, education, or other related field. Experience in park interpretation, adventure programming, outdoor recreation, teaching, and lesson/program planning are preferred.

Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. Must attend 3-day interpretive training workshop in May and 2-day canoe training. Training will require travel. Must provide uniform (through approved uniform supply company) and wear it in accordance with the VSP uniform policy. Must have valid driver’s license.

Seasonal Employment Opportunities for 2013

Parks Lifeguard: Safeguards and regulates the conduct of patrons to prevent unsafe practices and accidents; is alert to note possible swimmers in distress. Strictly enforces policies, rules and regulations governing the conduct of patrons and promptly warns users of existing safety hazards. Performs rescues and appropriate follow-up procedures including the use of any available equipment in the performance of First Aid/CPR. Performs other duties such as boat rentals, swim ticket and merchandise sales and cleaning area surrounding boat rental house.

Qualifications: Must be at least 16 years old and have reliable transportation. Must have current Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED Certification or be willing to obtain at your own cost prior to start date. Previous water safety experience preferred, but not required. Must be able to work well with other staff and with park guests. Must provide own uniform (through approved uniform supply company) and must be willing to work shift work, weekends and holidays from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Waterfront safety certification will be provided for successful candidates.

Food Service Technician I (Snack Bar Workers): Performs tasks as assigned in the snack bar. Duties include, but are not limited to, preparing/serving food and refreshments, washing dishes, and keeping kitchen area & equipment clean & operable. Keeps merchandise area neat and stocked. Ensures the correct collection and recording of all monies due for merchandise, food and swim ticket sales, operate cash register, and reconcile revenue collected to cash register reports. Basic knowledge of cash handling and computers is preferred. During periods of slow demand will be required to perform restroom cleaning.

Qualifications: Must be at least 16 years old and have reliable transportation. General knowledge of food preparation and kitchen operation preferred, but not required. Must be able to work well with other staff and with park guests. Must provide own uniform (through approved uniform company) and must be willing to work shifts, weekends, and holidays from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Boat Dock Attendants: Responsible for maintaining boats and boating equipment rented to the public. Ensures a high standard of customer service and makes sure that all equipment is functional and safe when leaving the dock. When not directly serving the public, attendants maintain boats, boat house, dock and all equipment. Perform inspections of all returned equipment to ensure equipment remains in the same good condition as when it left. Attendants ensure the correct collection and recording of all monies due for boat rentals, operate cash register, and reconcile revenue collected to cash register reports. Basic knowledge of cash handling and computers is preferred.

Qualifications: Must be at least 16 years old and have reliable transportation. General knowledge of boating desirable, but not required. Must provide own uniform (through approved uniform supply company) and be willing to work shifts, weekends, and holidays from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Successful candidates must be able to meet the Virginia Boating Safety Education Requirement.

Housekeepers: Primary focus includes proper cleaning of park buildings which includes 25 cabins, a meeting facility, Lodge, picnic shelters, bath houses, and bunkhouse. Efficient cleaning of rental buildings by check-in time is required. Will inventory cabin supplies to ensure they are available for the next guest. Housekeepers will also be responsible for sorting and preparing clean linens for distribution to necessary buildings.

Qualifications: Must be 16 years old, have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. Cleaning experience is preferred. Must be able to work in team environment and attend mandatory paid training to comply with OSHA requirements. Must provide own uniform (through approved uniform supply company) and be willing to work shifts, weekends and holidays as needed.

Trades Technician I (Maintenance): Performs the recurring grounds care, maintenance, light construction, and cleaning tasks necessary to operate state park facilities. Includes cleaning bathhouses, mowing grass, raking/removing leaf litter, trash and litter removal, cleaning campsites, cabins, meeting facility, light equipment and vehicle maintenance and trail maintenance.

Qualifications: Must be 16 years old, have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. General knowledge of the use and care of common hand tools and cleaning supplies, ability to organize and perform routine cleaning, and maintenance functions. Must be able to work in team environment and attend mandatory paid training to comply with OSHA requirements. Must provide own uniform (through approved uniform supply company) and be willing to work shifts, weekends and holidays as needed.
