  • 09/26/2015. Participate in Stewardship Virginia by joining us in celebrating National Public Lands Day. The Stewardship Virginia is a statewide bi-annual event to recognize volunteers that are working hard to preserve Virginia's resources. The Highlands are rich in pioneer culture and history that has been preserved over the years by volunteers working together with park staff. This past spring, Michelle Priden the president of the Independence Farmer's Market, assisted in the installation of a historically accurate pioneer herb and flower garden. This garden now showcases some of the cooking needs of the pioneers to park visitors. National Public Lands Day celebrates our special environments and ecosystems by learning, exploring and taking care of them on this special holiday. The National Environmental Education Foundation promotes this celebration and also funded the installation of the herb garden through a grant. Help preserve this garden by getting your hands dirty winterizing these precious plants for the long, butter cold that this area experiences. All volunteers will receive a signed certificate from Governor McAuliffe. DCR/Grayson Highlands State Park. Contact Amelia Hulth, (276) 579-7092, amelia.hulth@dcr.virginia.gov.
