Coinciding with the National Day of Service and Remembrance (9/11), the food drive was created to provide food for seniors and others in need. It is a day not only to honor those who have given all for their country, but a chance to give back and honor them with a day of volunteer service at a state park, or other special place. On this day we will be tending and enhancing the park's Cancer Survivor garden, originally planted in partnership with the American Cancer Society. Sky Meadows State Park will offer visitors the chance to serve and remember with a park beautification project and a memorial dedication for the “Fallen Hero’s of Fauquier County.” Join park rangers and volunteers at 10:00 a.m. to help plant a new native plant bed thanks to the Piedmont Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society. James River Regional Cleanup (September 13, 2014, various sites) Join the James River Advisory Council (JRAC) as they come together as a community to clean up the James River watershed. The 15th Annual James River Regional Cleanup will be Saturday, September 13. Each year, hundreds of volunteers make the cleanup a success. They collect hundreds of bags of trash and recyclable materials. JRAC invites you to be a part of this tremendous regional effort! Registration is easy. Select from a list of official James River Regional Cleanup sites, complete the online registration (Spanish registration also available) and show up Saturday, September 13. Sign-in will begin at 8:30 a.m., and refreshments will be provided between noon and 1 p.m. This annual event is open to individuals, families, groups, boaters and paddlers! Acorn collection from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. A Master Naturalist will be available to guide collectors to the best spots from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. You can also walk the trails and collect acorns on your own. The acorns will be sent to the Virginia Department of Forestry for cultivation. Many of the seedlings are used to plant riparian buffers to filter pollution before it gets into our waters. At Sky Meadows State Park on September 27, 2014, join more than 200,000 volunteers at over 2,000 sites throughout the United States as volunteers help restore the splendor and vivacity of our public lands as part of the 21st annual National Public Lands Day. In recognition of National Public Lands Day and Stewardship Virginia, Sky Meadows State Park will go to the squirrels; hosting an acorn collection, and various programs utilizing nuts from 11am to 3pm. The collected acorns will be sent to the Virginia Department of Forestry for cultivation.
